Intune, Intune Everywhere! New Microsoft Intune Licensing Explained – I hope!

Microsoft recently announced the new Intune (per user) Plans that can be purchased separate from the traditional EMS or Microsoft 365 SKU’s, and to hopefully reduce any confusion, I have outlined as much as I can below.

Let me start by outlining what is new. While Intune has quite a bit available to it already, Microsoft continues to sweeten the pot and has added the following items:

  • Microsoft Intune Tunnel for Mobile Application Management – A lightweight VPN solution for iOS and Android mobile devices that does not require device enrollment.
  • Microsoft Intune management of specialty devices – A set of device management, configuration and protection capabilities for special, purpose-built devices such as augmented reality and virtual reality headsets, large smart-screen devices, and conference room meeting devices.
  • Microsoft Intune Remote Help – A cloud-based solution that enables secure helpdesk-to-user connections.
  • Microsoft Intune Endpoint Privilege Management – A feature that allows standard users to perform elevations approved by their organization.
  • Microsoft Intune advanced endpoint analytics – A set of analytics-driven capabilities that help IT admins understand, anticipate, and improve end-user experiences. Initial features include customer device scopes, anomaly detection, and device timelines for troubleshooting.

The key question I get asked is, don’t I already have Intune? The short answer is, you might depending on the licensing model you currently have. If you are using multiple Microsoft 365 products, it is usually more cost effective to purchase the bundle. By default, Intune Plan 1 comes with the below licensing SKUs:

  • Microsoft 365 E5
  • Microsoft 365 E3
  • Enterprise Mobility + Security E5
  • Enterprise Mobility + Security E3
  • Microsoft 365 Business Premium
  • Microsoft 365 F1
  • Microsoft 365 F3

Ok, so now that we have that out of the way, let’s look at a breakdown of the individual licensing plans now.

Microsoft Intune Plan 1 – $8.00 per user per month

Intune Plan 1 is available in the licenses I mentioned above but this shows the base features that are available in this SKU:

  • Cross-platform endpoint management
  • Built-in endpoint security
  • Mobile application management
  • Endpoint analytics
  • Microsoft Configuration Manager CAL (included in all Plan 1 licenses except Business Premium)

In addition to the above, you can purchase the following add-ons to Plan 1

  • Microsoft Intune Remote Help – $3.50 per user per month
  • Microsoft Intune Endpoint Privilege Management – $3.00 per user per month
  • Microsoft Intune advanced endpoint analytics (Coming Soon)

Microsoft Intune Plan 2 – US $4.00 per user per month

This is an add-on to Intune Plan 1 and include the below items but is also included in the Intune Suite outlined below.

  • Microsoft Intune Tunnel for Mobile Application Management
  • Microsoft Intune management of specialty devices

Microsoft Intune Suite – $10.00 per user per month

As explained above, this is also an add-on to Plan 1 but has more capabilities than Plan 2, so ideally if you are looking for the most comprehensive solution, this would be your go to and since P1 is included in the M365 SKU’s, you can add this to those as well.

  • Microsoft Intune Tunnel for Mobile Application Management
  • Microsoft Intune management of specialty devices
  • Microsoft Intune Remote Help
  • Microsoft Intune Endpoint Privilege Management
  • Microsoft Intune advanced endpoint analytics

Hopefully you this outline helpful in your search for solutions!
